A Supreme 'Family Vacation'

Dunn Hereford Wins Breeding Beef Show

HARRISBURG, Pa. — It all started with a simple question, “Mom can we show at the Farm Show this year?” And it ended with Walker Dunn taking home the Pennsylvania Farm Show’s Breeding Beef Female Supreme Champion banner Monday. The champion is a Hereford, MH 29R Miss Rock 8181.
Before the announcement was made, Judge Tom Turner of Columbus, Ohio noted the quality of the champion drive.
“We don’t have a heifer that doesn’t merit this honor,” he said.
For the Dunn family, the announcement came as a surprise. Walker shared his excitement at getting to hang his first banner in his room.
In the past, Bobbi Dunn said, the family has traveled to the Western Stock Show to compete instead of coming to the Farm Show. However, when Walker asked if they could show at the Farm Show, the family decided to make the trip to Harrisburg and have a “family vacation.”
Joining the Dunns in the supreme drive was Katrina Frey of Quarryville with her Angus champion bull, Check Mate.
Judge Dan Eversol said that selecting Frey’s Angus bull was a unanimous choice between him and judge Turner. This was Frey’s first supreme champion at the Farm Show, but was not the first honor she has received with the bull.
In November, Check Mate was the senior bull champion at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Pa.
Frey was also name premier Angus exhibitor.
Other grand champions are as follows: Angus heifer — Dale Rains; Shorthorn heifer — James, Jackie and Sara Campbell; Shorthorn bull — Masonic Village; Hereford bull — Durham Valley Farm and Chiques Creek Cattle Co.; Simmental heifer — Caitlin Wolfgang; Simmental bull — Joseph Messick; Limousin heifer — Mosher family; Limousin bull — Elders Branch Farm; Maine-Anjou heifer — James, Jackie and Sara Campbell; Maine-Anjou Bull — Aaron Sisler; Red Angus heifer — J.H. Keifer; Red Angus bull — J.H Keifer; MaineTainer heifer — Tom and Pam Fisher; MaineTainer bull — Dennis Wolfe; Texas Longhorn female — Blue Ridge Longhorns; Texas Longhorn bull — Blue Ridge Longhorns.
