FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's cattle inventory heading into 2013 is up from the previous year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service says the state had 1.79 million head of cattle and calves on hand on Jan. 1, an increase of 100,000 from 2011.

The increase comes after five consecutive years with a decrease in herd size.

North Dakota's 2012 calf crop totaled 870,000 head, which is up from 2011's record low calf crop of 860,000 head.

Cows and heifers that have calved totaled 940,000 head, up 60,000 from a year ago.

Are egg-laying hens being treated well enough without increasing their cage size?
