HARRISBURG, Pa. — Coy Campbell of Gratz, Pa., found himself in a familiar place last week at the 2013 Farm Show Dairy Supreme Champion Pageant — in the winner’s circle.
Campbell’s Holstein, Shady-Row Dundee Daphne, a 5-year-old, was selected Jan. 11 as the supreme champion dairy cow.
“Just pretty handy winner, she had all first-place votes,” judge Bryant Hlavaty said. “A cow that has a high chine and pronounced openness, depth of rib a tremendous mammary system, that is the biggest difference between her and the Swiss.”
Hlavaty said for an older cow, she still moves very well around the ring.
Since September, Campbell has been in the winner’s circle three other times. First, Daphne was supreme champion of the All-American Dairy Show’s Premier National Junior Show in September. Second, she was reserve grand champion of the junior Holstein show at the World Dairy Expo. And third, she was youth supreme champion at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky.
“It’s just cool to see and remember how she was when she was small and how good she has become,” said Campbell, whose family purchased Daphne as a 6-month old calf.
The champion has a lifetime milk production of 95,000 pounds and is scored excellent 94 (EX-94). She was named 2013 Junior All-American 5-year-old by the national Holstein Association.
Her next competition will be the Pennsylvania Holstein Association’s Spring Championship Show in Harrisburg.
Coy is the 15-year-old son of Garth and Melissa Campbell. He attends Upper Dauphin Area High School.
The reserve supreme nod was given to Kulp-Gen Legacy Tiara-ET, exhibited by Megan Kulp of Manheim.
Hlavaty said the quality of all the champions was impressive and that he had seen several of them compete and win at other state, regional and national shows.
The other breed champions were:
Ayrshire — Maulfair Acres Prowler Peyton, exhibited by Pattie Maulfair, Jonestown, Pa.
Guernsey — Sniders Adacka Hummer, exhibited by Kendy Gable, New Enterprise, Pa.
Jersey — Klinedell H Gun Paline-ET, exhibited by Jacob Kline, Myerstown, Pa.
Milking Shorthorn — Innisfail BDC Stella 905, exhibited by Keith and Donnette Fisher, New Enterprise, Pa.
Red and White — Spungold-MVU-Salsa-Red-ET, exhibited by Roy Thompson and Jeremy McDonald, Wellsville, Pa.
