HARRISBURG, Pa. — In the waning hours of the 2013 Pennsylvania Farm Show, representatives from 12 FFA chapters gathered in the Exposition Hall to receive their video awards in the Agriculture Career Connections contest.
More than 330 votes were cast, and the Big Spring FFA chapter was the top vote getter for a video on therapeutic riding made in partnership with Wilson College.
Each of the 12 entries focused on an agricultural field of study at a post-secondary agricultural school or training program. The videos traced the path from career selection to required training and ultimately to potential employment.
Each chapter also created a scrapbook page summarizing its findings.
The winning video was selected based on the number of votes collected during the week of Farm Show after they were viewed on Lancaster Farming’s website or in a special viewing area at the Farm Show.
“All of them did a fantastic job on the exhibit,” Agriculture Secretary George Greig said about each entry.
Cliff Day, FFA facilitator from the state Department of Education, said the ag career theme was a new venture for the contest. He said it was “important to feature these programs” as students consider their future career paths.
The contest is sponsored by Lancaster Farming. Each team received $750 for their entry, $600 of it from Lancaster Farming. Big Spring Chapter earned an additional $250 as the People’s Choice award.
“You are trying out different roles to see what am I going to be,’ ” Lancaster Farming Editor Dennis Larison told the contestants. “You might have to try several different roles, but one will draw you in. Then, you will be real actors because you will take action.”
The other FFA chapter videos included:
Grand Canyon FFA — aquaculture with Mansfield University.
Conococheague FFA — John Deere service technician with SUNY Cobleskill.
Manheim FFA — dairy science major with Delaware Valley College.
