Ride ‘em Cowboy!

Life in the Farm Lane

This week, we had our first “rodeo” at the house as my son’s 4-H project calf escaped from her pen for a run across the backyard. I had been warning my son about the need to close the gate when cleaning the pen because the calf has attempted the trick several times before. However, sometimes experience is a better teacher than mom could ever be.

Last night, he was forking out the manure and voila, she made her escape darting across the backyard. After calming my son and the calf down, we were able to catch the escapee after a 10 minute run, haltering her and walk her back to the pen. The upswing, at least she did not need to be walked that night.

After she was back in the pen, munching away on her grain, I quietly asked, so what did we learn here? He said, never leave the gate open – and I have a feeling he won’t be so casual, at least for a little while.
