I’ll be honest. I’m not the best dairy farmer in that I can’t stand to drink plain, white milk. I’ll enjoy a class of chocolate milk with my breakfast or a milk shake at the fair, but sitting down with a glass of milk in the middle of the afternoon isn’t for me. I just never could acquire a taste for it.
But don’t take that to mean I don’t like milk at all, as long as it’s whole milk. I’m a huge fan of a big bowl of milk-covered cereal in the morning, and the vast majority of my recipes include milk.
Other dairy products, such as cheese and yogurt, rank a lot higher on my list of snack choices. Plus, I can eat a half-gallon of ice cream dessert if you let me.
My husband and son are a different story. When my husband and I started dating, I was astonished at how he could easily drink a gallon of whole milk in two days.
Thankfully, my husband’s taste for milk has been handed down to our son. OK, let’s keep in mind that my son entered the world at more than 10 pounds and in his 18 short months, he’s never fallen below the 98th percentile for height and weight. Yes, I have one huge little man.
And that little man has to eat a good bit more than others his age. When the doctor told me at 6 months old he should be getting at least 24 ounces of formula per day, I had to laugh. My boy was having more than 36 ounces and normally still wanted more.
When he turned a year old, we switched him from formula to whole milk. I was worried that he wouldn’t take to it, but he proved me wrong. Within a day of the switch, he was guzzling down milk, sometimes 18 ounces at a time.
On Monday morning, there were two full gallons of milk in my mom’s refrigerator – his daily caregiver. By Wednesday night, we were down to about two bottles-worth left. I was surprised, but not so much so that I can’t believe my boy drank that much this week.
Before he was on milk, grandma’s house rarely went through a gallon of milk in a week. Keeping that in mind, my son has had probably a gallon and a half in three days.
While milk may be his dairy product of choice right now, cheese, yogurt and pudding aren’t far behind. He’ll walk up to the refrigerator, say “cheese,” and patiently wait for you to get him a Mozzarella cheese stick.
Typically baby cereals aren’t appealing to him anymore, nor does he like the toddler themed cereal bars. While sliced fruit of any kind is a hit, a few mornings each week he’ll down a container of yogurt or pudding as his breakfast meal.
While I’m glad my son has certain traits from both my husband and I, I think I’m the happiest that he’s developed such a strong desire for dairy products in his daily routine – partially thanks to my hubby of course.
