USDA Releases Dairy Checkoff Extension Rule

3/22/2011 5:18 AM

USDA has published a final rule to extend a checkoff assessment to dairy imports and to all 50 states. The checkoff will be implemented in all 50 states by April 1. The import assessment will begin Aug. 1.

Funds will be collected by the National Dairy Board and used for nutrition research, consumer education, issues management and dairy promotion programs. The international assessment will be 7.5 cents per hundredweight.

The changes were made in the 2008 Farm Bill but have been delayed for the past three years.

Producers in the United States, including Puerto Rico, are assessed 15 cents per hundredweight of milk.
