I Want to Be a Farmer to Drive the Skid Steer

Life in the Farm Lane

I love listening to my boys describing what they want to do when they grow up. The best one that I have heard lately was my eldest talking about growing up to be a farmer.
Why? He can’t wait to drive the skid steer. Yep, of all the things he dreams of doing, driving a skid steer around the farm is the most compelling.
One might ask why not a tractor? What about the cows? While mine is not to guess the inner workings of the 7-year-old mind, at best I think it’s because when he helps around the barn, it is the one piece of equipment he always sees his dad and granddad driving.
I have always been amazed at how critical the skid steer is around our farm. If the skid steer breaks, the day is a disaster. We use it for just about everything from feeding heifers, cleaning barns and bedding stalls to helping haul things around the farm. So, of course my son is aspiring to just be like daddy.
My 7-year-old also has a game plan for his farming aspiration. First, daddy will get to be in charge, then he will and, finally, it will be his younger brother’s turn to run the farm. Of course, this plan could change by tomorrow.
