Farm Show Starting to Take Shape

PA Farm Show

It’s hard to believe, it will soon be time to head to the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
It’s one of the earliest starts I have ever seen. Between Christmas and New Year holiday preparations, our family has been organizing for the 2014 show. I have been spending every spare moment pulling the show box out of storage, taking inventory of supplies and working with my parents to find stray items.
I even got to take the Guernsey heifers out for a walk to see if they “remember” how to act in a show ring. Of course, when we took my son’s calf out of her group pen, it became apparent she had more of a growth spurt than him. Good for the calf, but that makes it more of a challenge for an 8-year-old boy.
However, I am not the only one trying to pull things together for the 2014 edition of the show.
The Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association team is working with its butter sculptor to make sure the annual butter dairy tribute will be ready for its formal unveiling on Jan. 2. PennAg Industries and its partner organizations have been putting the finishing touches on their Today’s Ag educational display. They reported the ducks for the exhibit arrived on New Year’s Eve and snapped a picture of the ducklings hanging out in their pen for PennAg's Facebook page.
Farm Show staff and volunteers are preparing for the onslaught of entries that will begin arriving Thursday morning.
And on social media, I have seen exhibitor notes with sighs of relief as market livestock has “made weight” and will be eligible for competition and hopefully sale on Jan. 7.
Of course, the one item people look forward to, all of the food. Farm Show milkshakes will celebrate their 60th anniversary at the show. And many of the Farm Show “must-haves” will be for sale – many from agricultural organizations raising funds for ag research and promotion.
Can’t make the show? Stay tuned to our website for the latest updates, news, photos and show results.
