In honor of this weekend’s Pennsylvania Holstein Association annual meeting, this week’s “Cow of the Week” is Burket-Falls Elevation Sophia owned and bred by John Burket of East Freedom, Pa. She is one of the 24 cows selected by association members as one of the state’s famous cows.
Sired by Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation, Sophia was scored Excellent 93 and was a Gold Medal Dam (GDM) and Dam of Merit (DOM). Born Aug. 8, 1974, she lived to be 16 ½ years old with a lifetime milk production of 241,000 pounds of milk and 10,100 pounds of fat. She was All-Pennsylvania 4-Year-Old in 1979, and nominated Junior All-American from 1979 through 1982.
More than 90 percent of the Burket herd traces back to Sophia on the top and bottom side of the pedigrees. She is the foundation of five generations of GMD-DOM cows, has produced at least 130 Excellent offspring in the Burket herd, in addition to countless others in different herds, and more than 100 bulls have entered AI from her family.
