A Battle of ‘Swats’

Life in the Farm Lane

The score is flies 4, me 0. With last week’s warm weather, flies have invaded the Espenshade house. I had hoped to fare better with the annual battle. But the flies seem to have the upper hand in early days of this warm weather conflict. It’s one of the costs of living in the country, especially when so many farmers have been applying manure to the fields in the township.

My youngest has taken to swatting flies with the fly swatter with great abandon. I do wonder how many he’s hitting, but one is better than none, I say.

My husband and I have looked around the house to find where they might be sneaking in, but with no avail.

In the past, it was easy to point to the boys leaving a door open, providing easy access into the house, or a hole in the kitchen screen door. But, the holes were fixed and we have not had any errant opened doors.

So, the battle wages on as I spray down the house with a fly spray every morning after the family heads out the door for work, school and barn as a way to knock down the population. I keep debating hanging the fly-sticky tapes as another mode of combat, but I'm holding off in the hope that I will get the upper hand without them.

I hope to get a handle on the fly situation soon, but in the meantime, the boys keep swatting away.
