Pest pressure in fields with blends of varieties, slug pressure in barley and current best practices will be discussed in a Winter Wheat Walk 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 15.

The hosts, Norman and Edwin Burkholder, 187 Smoketown Road, Mertztown, Pa., established the replicated plots last fall in cooperation with a study by Penn State Extension. They grow grain and hay for direct market to customers.

John Tooker, from Penn State’s Department of Entomology, will discuss the study and the findings so far. The treatments include two monocultures and one with a diversity of wheat varieties.

Alyssa Collins, farm manager of the Penn State Research and Extension Center in Landisville, will also be on hand to talk about current conditions for diseases.

No registration or fee is required to attend. Look for the signs at the driveway of 187 Smoketown Road, Mertztown, Pa.
