LANCASTER, Pa. — A Millersville, Pa., man was killed May 3 after he was run over by a tractor in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County.

Ralph Clair Kauffman, 81, of Circle Road, was pronounced dead at the scene by Chief Deputy Coroner Eric Bieber.

The accident happened around 9:45 a.m. at 3355 Harrisburg Pike. According to East Hempfield Township police, the driver accidentally backed over Kauffman as he was preparing to attach a mower to the back of the tractor.

“The man lost his balance and the driver didn’t see him fall,” Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni said. “He was crushed when the tractor backed over top of him. He died instantly.”

The driver stopped the tractor immediately after he felt the wheel pass over Kauffman, Diamantoni said.

The accident took place during a sales transaction, police said, in which the tractor driver was considering buying the mower from Kauffman. Diamantoni said he believes the accident happened on Kauffman’s property.
