The Pennsylvania Women’s Agricultural Network, or PA-WAgN, has arranged a tour of a goat dairy 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Wayside Acres Goat Dairy, 1570 Keystone Way, Newport, Pa.
The Perry County mother-daughter team of Cathy and Gwen Soult will lead a tour of their registered raw milk goat dairy.
They make chevre and feta cheeses and sell their dairy products at the Newport Natural Foods store as well as on-farm, direct to consumer sales.
They will describe how their humble beginnings from bringing one goat to the farm to clear brush somehow grew to a dairy herd of award-winning Nubians, Alpines, LaMancha and Saanens.
Participants will tour the cheesemaking facility and experience the art of cheese-making with a hands-on activity.
Pennsylvania milk regulations, licensing and sanitation requirements will be addressed as well as the pros and cons of various marketing strategies.
Cost is $15, which includes lunch. Register online at http://agsci.psu.edu/wagn/events.
